Back in the 50’s, the city dammed the river at the site of the rapids to build a hydroelectric plant. But what about the chinook salmon?
We’re about 2,000 miles from the Bering Sea so it’s quite a journey. Most don’t make it through the three month journey but those that do need to get to their spawning grounds. So the city officials built this awesome fish ladder when they dammed the river.
In this view, the dam is behind me. Fish enter on the left and make the hairpin turn so that they’re coming at me. I’m at the high point so it’s smooth sailing once they get here.
